Campaign URL builder for WordPress marketers
A campaign URL builder adds UTM parameters to your links in a consistent way, so PureMetrix (and your team) can see which campaign brought each visitor—without guesswork.
Why a builder beats editing links by hand
Hand-edited links drift: mixed upper and lower case, typos in campaign names, a missing medium. A builder enforces your naming rules and encodes special characters safely.
Use our UTM builder tool or a shared spreadsheet with input validation. The tool is just a convenience; your agreed naming rules are what really matter.
Fields to fill in every time
- Base URL (HTTPS, the final landing page—not a chain of redirects you do not control).
- utm_source
- utm_medium
- utm_campaign
- Optional: content or term, e.g. to compare two ad designs
Check in PureMetrix
After building a URL, open it while logged out, then check in PureMetrix that the pageview arrived and appears under the right campaign.
Examples
https://example.com/demo/?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=webinar-oct Email example: source=newsletter, medium=email, campaign=product-update-36.
Quality checklist
- Redirects keep the part of the URL after the question mark.
- No duplicate tags from combining an ad platform’s auto-tagging with manual UTMs without a rule.
- The landing page delivers what the ad promises (check the bounce rate).
- Goals are reached on the thank-you page for that campaign.
Agency workflow
Keep one naming document per client. A shared dashboard link shows clients their campaign results without giving them access to edit links. Guide: share dashboards.
Naming rules that survive handovers
Builders fail when every marketer invents their own spelling. Fix lowercase pairs of source and medium, one campaign prefix per product line, and a content value for each ad variant. Keep the naming sheet next to the builder so freelancers do not switch between FB and facebook halfway through a campaign.
After building, open the URL in a private window, follow any redirects, and check that the parameters are still there on the final page. Click tracking in email tools and some CDNs can silently remove them.
Test before you spend money
If possible, click the link five times from the real channel’s preview. In PureMetrix, filter by campaign and check the landing pages and goals for that tag—not only the raw pageviews. Broken UTMs waste budget faster than a weak headline.
The builder fields that really matter
Source and medium tell you the channel. Campaign names the initiative. Content identifies the ad or link variant. Term is optional, for paid keywords. Avoid custom parameters until these core fields have been used cleanly for a quarter.
Create both the full https link and a short link that forwards to the tagged URL. Generate QR codes from the short link so flyers and posters show up under the same PureMetrix campaign.
Keeping records
Save built URLs in the ticket, not only in one marketer’s notes app. When someone leaves, the next person should be able to reuse last month’s tags without digging.
Examples worth copying
utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2026-09-launch&utm_content=hero-cta is far better than a vague utm_campaign=test. A date prefix makes old campaigns easy to find. Avoid spaces; use hyphens.
Set this pattern as your builder’s default so nobody can submit an empty campaign field.
Automatic tagging
If your ad platform tags links automatically, write down whether you rely on its tags or replace them with your builder’s. Mixing both without a rule creates duplicate rows in PureMetrix. Choose one method per channel and add it to your launch checklist.
For email, only rely on your email tool’s link tracking once you have checked that it keeps your UTMs when redirecting clicks.
Do not translate tags
Do not translate UTM values into local languages; keep the same fixed values everywhere and translate the ad text instead. Tags in mixed languages split your PureMetrix filters and confuse reporting for launches in several countries.
Keep the naming sheet in a wiki or version control, with dates, so old tags can still be understood later.
Save the generated URL in your campaign brief along with the ad design and send time, so analysts do not have to reconstruct tags a month later.
Use lowercase campaign names with hyphens so copying from chat tools does not create duplicate rows from capitalised variants.
Archive old campaign URLs in your email tool or ad account so historical PureMetrix filters still make sense years later.
