Matomo vs PureMetrix for WordPress
Matomo is a broad analytics platform (on your own server or in the cloud). PureMetrix is a focused, cookieless service hosted in the EU, with its own WordPress plugin. The choice comes down to many features vs getting useful numbers quickly.
Range of features
Matomo offers a wide range of features. That power comes with setup and maintenance work, especially if you host it yourself. PureMetrix does less on purpose: traffic, campaigns, goals, WooCommerce purchases and privacy-friendly defaults.
General overview: PureMetrix vs Matomo.
Working in WordPress
The PureMetrix plugin connects your site in a few clicks, has its settings inside WordPress, can exclude logged-in staff by role, offers an optional /px proxy and lets you share dashboards via link. It is built for site owners and agencies.
Cookies and privacy
Matomo can be set up in a privacy-friendly way, but someone has to configure it deliberately. PureMetrix counts visitors without cookies by default, using a random value (salt) that changes daily. Data is hosted in the EU at Hetzner.
When Matomo is the better choice
- You need in-depth analytics features that Matomo already provides.
- You have the people and time to run your own server properly.
- Your company has already chosen Matomo as its standard.
When PureMetrix is the better choice
- You want cookieless analytics without a long setup project.
- WordPress and WooCommerce are at the centre of your business.
- Your agency needs quick, repeatable installs for many clients.
Total cost
Compare the licence plus your team’s time, not the licence alone. A "free" self-hosted install can end up costing more than a hosted service once updates and server problems land on your desk.
Many features vs maintenance effort
Matomo is the better fit when you need a broad analytics suite and are willing to pay for self-hosting know-how or Matomo Cloud. Whether cookies and consent are needed depends on how you set it up—do not assume “self-hosted” means cookieless.
PureMetrix is narrower on purpose: cookieless by default, a script under 3 KB, EU hosting at Hetzner, a quick WordPress connection, staff exclusion by role, the /px proxy, server-side WooCommerce purchase tracking and shareable dashboards. Pick Matomo if you want to run everything yourself; pick PureMetrix for a lean, privacy-friendly WordPress setup.
Extra work on WordPress
Self-hosted Matomo needs updates, backups and PHP/MySQL maintenance on top of WordPress itself. With PureMetrix, the provider takes over that work under a DPA (data processing agreement). Count the real staff hours before calling “free self-hosting” cheaper.
Rough cost comparison
Self-hosted Matomo: server, updates, plugin compatibility, restoring backups, and staff who understand its settings. Matomo Cloud: a subscription, and still a larger product to learn. PureMetrix: a plan based on pageviews, quick WordPress connection, fewer settings, cookieless by default.
Neither is always cheaper. Think about who fixes things when something breaks at 2 a.m.—that usually decides it.
The cookie myth
“We host it ourselves, so we are cookieless” is only true if you set it up that way. Check the actual tracking settings. PureMetrix is cookieless by default; because Matomo is so flexible, your install may not be.
Using it day to day
With PureMetrix, marketers start from the familiar WordPress admin and open the full dashboard when they need more. Matomo usually means a separate interface with more controls. Neither is wrong: consider whether your team wants yet another tool to log in to, and whether you need cookieless analytics without much setup.
Extensions
Matomo’s plugin marketplace and PureMetrix’s WordPress focus grow in different directions. If you need specialised Matomo plugins, Matomo wins. If you want a lean WordPress install, server-side WooCommerce purchases and cookieless defaults, PureMetrix is the shorter path.
Security updates
Self-hosted analytics is one more piece of software beside WordPress that needs security updates. Plan time for that. With PureMetrix, the provider handles updates under the DPA—still check the status page, but you are not installing Matomo updates at midnight before a launch.
If Matomo has to stay for company reasons, you can still give marketers PureMetrix for their weekly WordPress decisions instead of making everyone learn both tools.
Choose Matomo when your IT team already runs it well; choose PureMetrix when WordPress marketers need cookieless analytics without another platform to look after.
Include staff hours for Matomo updates and plugin compatibility in your cost calculation; the licence is rarely the full cost of self-hosting.
If you already use Matomo for apps beyond WordPress, keep it there and use PureMetrix only for your WordPress marketing sites, so you don’t run two tools everywhere.
