Keep event and property names the same over time. Create a goal for the event under Goals, and see the breakdown by property on the properties dashboard.

After changing the tracking code, open your site in a private browser window and check that the visit shows up in Realtime.
If numbers look wrong, check the domain and public key, the Free plan limit, and your bot and user-role exclusions.
